Post-Surgical Knee Rehab: Returning to Gardening and Play
Hannah Munn, DPT | Living Well Center for Integrative Health – Essex Junction, VT
Patient: 62-year-old Williston resident
Primary concerns: Post-surgical knee weakness, limited balance, and compensatory low back pain
The Challenge
After knee surgery the patient doubted whether strength and balance would return enough to garden on hillsides or play actively with grandchildren.
Assessment & Integrated Plan
Thorough evaluation of knee motion, strength, balance, gait, and functional tasks, plus chiropractic assessment of compensatory low back mechanics. Treatment combined:
Progressive land-based strengthening, balance, and gait training
Aquatic therapy for reduced joint load and earlier strengthening
Chiropractic care for spinal and pelvic mechanics
Outcomes That Mattered
Walking on hills and grass felt more stable and less painful
Able to squat, kneel with support, and return to standing more easily in the garden
Low back discomfort decreased as gait and loading became more symmetrical
Returned to gardening on sloped terrain, hill walks, and active play with grandchildren
Why This Worked
Aquatic therapy allowed earlier loading, while land-based work and chiropractic care restored strength, balance, and efficient movement patterns after surgery.
